My paintings are about transformation, from the literal to the void and its coming full circle. When I first started painting, I painted in a tangible way, sort of childlike or folk art style. When I began this process, I realized I painted to heal a longing to know myself. I identified with the freedom of flight and the bucolic and sylvan landscapes I grew up with in Wisconsin.
I began to experiment with abstractions and what I like to call improvisational painting. The freedom of abstract allows me to step into the void of the imagination where textural, spacial, elemental, and ethereal subjects unfold and filter through the paintbrush. I like painting this way because it helps interpret visually my interests in spiritual matters, nature, symbolism, and cultural heritage.
The spray paint paintings are lighthearted, whimsical, playful, and symbolic like kaleidoscopes, tie dyes, and mandalas. They represent the continuous and cyclical motion of transcendence. We are always evolving and changing and these paintings are a celebration of that process.
